And a 16 inch iPad Pro would’ve probably benefitted from a better screen resolution to ‘fit’ with the desktop via AstroPad. It would’ve solved the AstroPad issues of screen estate allowing users to access the tool sets rather than having to move the screen around or look up to use the desktop mouse. Had the iPad Pro been 16 inches or the size of a 11 x 17 illustration board ( in the case for comic book illustrators ), this would’ve solved the problem without the need to pinch/zoom/rotate a canvas or desktop remotely.

Plus the 12.9 iPad screen size doesn’t quite cut it due to limitations in order to ‘move’ the canvas or desktop screen around remotely in order to access the tool sets. I would say that it’s a disadvantage if one were to use an iPad and have to recharge the Pencil or tablet time to time when using AstroPad over a long period of time. And that’s where the flaws were revealed in front of me. I then asked myself “ Why am I working on AstroPad remotely mimicking the Cintiq when I already have the same apps on my iPad? “. For instance, a 300 dpi project file on Photoshop or Sketchbook Pro in 1000 by 1000 pixels size or larger may slow down the connection between iPad and computer, whereas a file that’s 150dpi or lower for web use will probably lessen the choppiness. I also suspect, considering from what I’ve seen now, that the larger the image file size is created via AstroPad on whatever app it’s working with, the more sluggish it gets.

Otherwise, wifi is what they require for remote work, if one wants to draw while sitting at a sofa while the desktop or laptop is on. It’s pretty neat to see the desktop screen being mirrored live on the tablet. And since the iPad Pro screen has Liquid Retina at 2732 by 2048 pixels on 264 ppi, it’s vastly superior to the iPad screen.
I often wondered if the wifi played a role in it even though it performed admirably well when working remotely with the AstroPad on iPad. To start, at the image below, one can see the actual screenshot of Astropad Studio which I’m testing on rather than Standard and due to having more features.Īfter trying out Sketchbook Pro directly with AstroPad via the desktop using the multitouch features, it had some choppiness compared to the standalone iOS app. I had once thought that perhaps the Astropad might be the Wacom killer as I’ve heard many times on forums such as MacRumors or AppleInsider. It’s a very fortunate thing that my Intuos 4 has been working since 2011 and going strong. I’ve never owned a Cintiq and noticed that they are on a fixed resolution size to mirror the desktop screen, but the standard tablet such as the Intros is resolution independent which means it’ll work on ANY monitor regardless. But what I learned in this process was interesting but also strange.

I’ve decided to take the bite and go with the 30 day trial period to see if it’ll fit into my digital workflow. For the last couple of years that I’ve owned an iPad Pro ( 12.9 model ), the Astropad app got me intrigued even after having extensive experience using the old school Wacom Intuos 4.
